2011 Working Together Coalition Annual Celebration!

STICKER SHOCK! click any photo for larger view, including the sticker
The Working Together Coalition is a group of youth and adults working together to address issues related to underage drinking in the school districts of Pine River-Backus, Northland Community and Walker-Hackensack-Akeley. We will be participating with off sale establishments that are interested in partnering with us. This project aims to reach those individuals over age 21 who legally purchase alcohol and provide it to a minor. The campaign consists of youth-designed stickers being adhered to multi-packs of alcoholic beverages (beer, wine coolers, etc) in participating retail stores. A team of youth, accompanied by an adult chaperone, will visit each store at a time of mutual convenience during the scheduled campaign dates, to place the stickers on and hang up the 8 x 11” poster(s). If you prefer to have your employees place the stickers on and/or hang the posters on your own during those dates, we will be happy to simply deliver the appropriate number to you.

TEENS LEADING THE WAY

Would you like to be part of a team, use your talents and individuality, have fun, and be inspired to do something in your community? Then come join Teens Leading the Way, a leadership group that meets to discuss ways to keep teens healthy, safe, and responsible, by not using alcohol, tobacco or drugs. Come and check it out or visit us on Facebook and see pictures of what we are up to!

Pine River-Backus TLTW meets every Tuesday during Lunch in Mr. Anderson’s Room

MOST OF US

Most of Us® is a Positive Community Norms (PCN) campaign which challenges people’s commonly-held perceptions about their environment and the behavior of their peers, as well as their beliefs about how problems like underage drinking should be confronted. This campaign seeks to reduce youth alcohol use without focusing on fear or negativity. Most of Us® works to refocus our vision on the positive, healthy normative behaviors in the community.

Each year students in the Pine River Backus School District participate in the Most Of Us® Survey. Data from this survey is used to correct the misperceptions that teens have about their peers and alcohol, tobacco and other drug use (ATOD) Click here to view the most recent Youth Survey Key Findings Report.

Most of Us® is a registered servicemark of Montana State University.
Parents Who Host Lose the Most
Don't be a party to teenage drinking. Many well-meaning parents think that it is enough to take away car keys at their teen's parties so the teens can't drink and drive. Parents provide the alcohol or allow alcohol to be consumed based on the false belief that it's a rite of passage, especially at prom and graduation parties.  It is illegal to serve alcohol to anyone but your own child!  You could be charged with a Gross Misdemeanor for providing alcohol to a minor. Click here to view the Minnesta State Laws regarding alcohol use.
WORKING TOGETHER COALiTION

The Working Together Coalition recently received the Shutting off the Tap to Teens - Coalition of the year award from the Minnesota Prevention Resource Center. The award was received for the Coalition accomplishment over the past year. Highlights of those accomplishments include:

  • Expanding the Coalition into WHA school district and Northland Community school districts.
  • Working with Cass County and the City of Pine River to establish Social Host Policy.
  • Collaboration with local school districts.
  • Establishing youth leadership teams (Teens Leading the Way) in each school district.
  • Reaching out to parents.

The goal of the Working Together Coalition is to provide the school districts of Northland Community, Pine River-Backus and Walker-Hackensack-Akeley information on how to prevent the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs among our youth. We will do this by providing you information about what our Coalition is doing locally and also direct you to existing online resources that will provide information to see more, please visit our website at www.workingtogethercoalition.org
